As the highly anticipated Taiwanese idol drama, Bai Jing Nv Wang (loosely translated as Material Queen), enters preparation stages, there have been reports that heartthrob Jerry Yan and Shu Qi are set to take on the drama's lead roles.
Producer of the show Chen Yu Shan did not deny the report directly. She said that she has a discussion with Jerry and is now waiting for him to ink the contract.
As for the female lead, Chen refused to confirm reports that Shu Qi would be taking on the role, only saying that the role in question would be taken up by an actress who "is well-known but has not acted in TV dramas before".
Shu Qi, however, denied her involvement.
"For the second half of this year my schedule is all packed. It's impossible for me to take on the drama."
Chen revealed that she had considered casting Jerry's rumored beau and Taiwanese model-turned-actress, Li Chi-ling, but decided that news of the 'reunion' would overshadow the drama. She added that it is also probably impossible that Chi-ling would accept the role too.
Despite Jerry's denial of his participation in this drama series, it was reported that he has been worrying about speaking French and taking violin lessons, a clear indication that he is preparing for his role as a French-speaking violist.
Besides award-winning Taiwanese director Chen Hui-ling, art-director Charles E. McCarry and Sex and the City stylist Patricia field are also slated to join the strong line-up of backstage crew.
The drama will also be filming scenes in France. Budgeted at TWD120m (S$6m), Material Queen is set to be the biggest production in the history of Taiwanese TV drama production.
