TAIWANESE artiste Jerry Yan (who plays Dr Su in popular TV series The Hospital, currently airing on 8TV) has been appointed by eight World Vision offices in Asia as their first Asia Child Sponsorship Ambassador.
World Vision is a relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice.
According to a Press release, Yan will be the spokesperson for World Vision offices in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand and Taiwan, helping the organisation to promote its Child Sponsorship Programme during his ambassadorship.
Yan’s first task was to visit three Mongolian children sponsored by him and his fan club. He left Taiwan on Oct 24 for the week-long project visit together with media representatives and World Vision delegates from Taiwan and Singapore.
He will be meeting the two boys and one girl at the World Vision Dundgobi Area Development Programme in Mongolia.
Prior to his departure at the airport, Yan said: “I believe that by personally meeting the children and experiencing their lives, I will learn to value what I possess.”
While in Mongolia, he will also visit street children and witness the plight living in extreme poverty, in an environment where temperatures can drop as low as -40°Celsius in the winter.
He will see how World Vision development work in Mongolia is transforming lives through sponsors.
Yan revealed that his fan club in Hong Kong is sponsoring 29 children for five years through World Vision Hong Kong.
“I was very touched when I found out that one of my fans who showed up at the airport to see me off has been a World Vision child sponsor for 12 years.”
For RM600 per child per year, individuals or corporations can sign up as a World Vision child sponsor.
Yan will also go on a tour round Asia from early this month to late December to share his observations from the visit and stories of child sponsorship.
