Jerry helps out
By MICHAEL CHEANG
Taiwanese heartthrob Jerry Yan has been appointed as the first Asia Child Sponsorship Ambassador for charity organisation World Vision.
He will be the spokesperson for World Vision offices in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand and Taiwan, helping World Vision to promote its Child Sponsorship Programme.
Jerry Yan is World Vision’s first Asia Child Sponsorship Ambassador.
Best known for being part of boy band F4, Yan is also known as the star of popular Taiwanese TV series The Hospital (now airing on 8TV).
The first task he undertook upon his new appointment was to visit three Mongolian children sponsored by him and his fan club.
Yan left Taiwan on Oct 24 for the weeklong project visit and met the children at the World Vision Dundgobi Area Development Programme in Mongolia, where he also visited street children and witnessed the plight of those living in extreme poverty.
“I believe by personally meeting the children and experiencing their lives, I will benefit and learn to value what I possess,” said the star, adding that his fan club in Hong Kong is also sponsoring 29 children for five years through World Vision Hong Kong.
After his Mongolia trip, Yan will tour round Asia from early this month till late next month to share his observations from the visit and stories of child sponsorship.
World Vision is a Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice.
